Construction of the HSL Zuid in a Cornfield between Bergschenhoek and Berkel en Rodenrijs
In the center of the Randstad conurbation, which consists of, among others, Amsterdam, Utrecht, Rotterdam and The Hague, lies the so-called Green Heart (Groene Hart). The Green Heart is a relatively, sparsely populated, rural area, which, according to many people, should be preserved. However, over the years expanding municipalities in the area gradually eat out portions of the Green Heart by the development of office parks and residential areas in it. Projects as the HSL Zuid adds to this as the HSL crosses through the area connecting Amsterdam and Rotterdam. The situation on the photo, therefore, can be considered typical for the region.
